When Fairies Come to Tea

One of my summer projects this year is the construction of a fairy garden. For most of you who aren't sure what a fairy garden is, think of it like a terrarium but with miniature accents and tiny landscaping. The Edmonton Journal posted an article a couple months ago explaining the growing trend. I've picked it up from other bloggers and Etsy, my source of inspiration for most things crafty.

I've started with a relatively small terracotta pot, about as round as a dinner plate. I've filled the bottom with pebbles and a foam wreath base. You should use charcoal if all your plants are going to be real, however since I'm mixing my one small fern with a bunch of plastic foliage, I opted for the foam. I'm covering all that with a layer of fertilized potting soil. I have this vision of a little flowery home with a creek and pond, so I've purchased small blue glass rocks to use as "water", and a little terracotta dish I will paint to look like a koi pond. I have a small birdhouse to fancy up and a pottery sugar bowl - I just couldn't decide which I prefered for the house. I'll post some before and after pictures once I have everything put together.

Week in Review: Tripping the Parks Fantastic

The last weekend with my mum and grandma visiting was an eventful one. We had a lovely trip to Fort Edmonton Park, did some shopping at the Strathcona Farmer's Market, and visited the Muttart Conservatory.


Fort Edmonton Park was fantastic. Matt and I bought annual passes so we can visit frequently through the year. They are having a Canada Day celebration as well as a Hallowe'en costume extravaganza that we plan on attending. The Fort is laid out in separate sections, starting with a replica of the actual Fort that was built by the Hudson's Bay Company to provide shelter for traders and to act as a meeting place for the Natives and the newly arrived Europeans. Next comes 1885 Street, the era where Edmonton became a proper town. There is a hotel, a saloon, an RCMP outpost and a millinery, where I tried on the hat.

There is also 1902 Street and 1920 Street, where you can see the changes that time brings about to the city. There is a midway with games, a ferris wheel, and a carousel. It was a lot to take in, and we will definitely go back just to see all the rest of the sights.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood

A short post today, because tomorrow my family arrives! My mum and grandma are coming in from Ontario to spend 12 days with me so I don't go super stir-crazy and get eight more cats. Expect lots more photos and tales of our exploits in the coming days.

In the meantime, I would like to share some more of the photos I have taken out and about in our neighbourhood. I love cities where things actually grow and there is real plant life. Let us never speak of the barren wasteland of Medicine Hat again.

And here's one that my husband sent me. As you can see, he's working hard in Wainwright and yet still has time to groom his dashing cavalry moustache.
